Hyperlipidemia
Hyperlipidemia, commonly known as high cholesterol, is a condition in which there are elevated levels of lipids (fats) in the blood, including cholesterol and triglycerides. Over time, excess cholesterol can build up inside the arteries and form plaque, which may narrow or block blood vessels and reduce blood flow throughout the body.
SYMPTOMS
of Hyperlipidemia
High cholesterol itself usually does not cause symptoms. Many people do not know they have hyperlipidemia until it is identified through blood testing or after cardiovascular disease develops.
Over time, plaque buildup in the arteries (atherosclerosis) can lead to symptoms such as:
Chest pain or pressure
Shortness of breath
Fatigue with activity
Pain in the legs while walking
Symptoms related to heart attack or stroke

DIAGNOSIS
of Hyperlipidemia
Hyperlipidemia is diagnosed with a blood test called a lipid panel, which measures:
Total cholesterol
LDL (“bad”) cholesterol
HDL (“good”) cholesterol
Triglycerides
Your provider will review your results along with your medical history, family history, and cardiovascular risk factors to determine the best treatment plan.

TREATMENT
for Hyperlipidemia
Treatment for hyperlipidemia focuses on lowering cholesterol levels and reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Many patients can improve cholesterol levels through healthy lifestyle changes, including:
Lifestyle Changes
Following a heart-healthy diet
Exercising regularly
Maintaining a healthy weight
Quitting smoking
Limiting alcohol intake
Medications
If lifestyle changes alone are not enough, medications may be recommended to help lower cholesterol and reduce cardiovascular risk.
