Automatic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (AICD)

An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is a small, battery-powered device placed under the skin of the chest to monitor and treat dangerous abnormal heart rhythms, also known as arrhythmias.

An ICD continuously monitors the heart rhythm and can deliver pacing therapy or an electrical shock if a life-threatening arrhythmia is detected. ICDs are commonly used to help prevent sudden cardiac arrest in patients at increased risk for serious ventricular arrhythmias.

WHO MAY BENEFIT

Your cardiologist or electrophysiologist may recommend an ICD if you: 
  • Have ventricular tachycardia (VT) 
  • Have ventricular fibrillation (VF) 
  • Have survived sudden cardiac arrest 
  • Have heart failure or a weakened heart muscle 
  • Are at increased risk for dangerous arrhythmias due to certain heart conditions or inherited disorders 

How an ICD Works 
The ICD is implanted beneath the skin, typically near the collarbone. Thin wires, called leads, connect the device to the heart and allow it to continuously monitor heart rhythm and deliver therapy when needed. 
Depending on the rhythm detected, the ICD may: 
  • Deliver pacing therapy 
  • Deliver an electrical shock to restore a normal rhythm 
  • Function as a pacemaker when necessary

WHAT TO EXPECT

During ICD Implantation
ICD implantation is typically performed using a minimally invasive procedure with sedation and local anesthesia. The device is placed beneath the skin and connected to leads positioned within the heart. 
Many patients return home the same day or the following day, depending on their individual recovery and medical needs. 

Recovery and Follow-Up 
Mild soreness or swelling near the incision site is common after implantation. Regular follow-up visits and remote monitoring help ensure the device continues to function properly.
