Electrophysiology Study and 3D Mapping

An electrophysiology (EP) study is a minimally invasive procedure used to evaluate the heart's electrical system and diagnose abnormal heart rhythms, also known as arrhythmias.

During an EP study, an electrophysiologist uses specialized catheters and advanced technology to evaluate how electrical signals travel through the heart. In many cases, cardiac mapping is performed to create a detailed map of the heart's electrical activity, helping identify the source of abnormal heart rhythms and guide treatment decisions.

  • Atrial fibrillation (AFib) 
  • Atrial flutter 
  • Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) 
  • Ventricular tachycardia (VT)

WHAT TO EXPECT

During the Procedure 

EP studies are performed using thin catheters inserted through a vein and guided to the heart. Advanced mapping technology may be used to evaluate electrical pathways and identify areas responsible for abnormal heart rhythms. 

In some cases, treatment such as cardiac ablation may be performed during the same procedure. 

Most EP studies are performed with sedation to help patients remain comfortable.

RECOVERY

Recovery is typically quick, with many patients returning home the same day or the following day. Mild soreness or bruising at the catheter insertion site may occur.

  • Cardiac ablation 
  • A pacemaker 
  • An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)
