Pacemaker

A pacemaker is a small, battery-powered device used to help the heart maintain a regular rhythm. It sends electrical impulses to help correct slow or abnormal heartbeats, also called arrhythmias.

Pacemakers are commonly recommended for patients whose hearts beat too slowly or whose heart’s electrical system is not working properly.

Types of Pacemakers 
Several types of pacemakers are available depending on a patient's condition and treatment needs, including: 
  • Single-chamber pacemakers 
  • Dual-chamber pacemakers 
  • Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices 
  • Leadless pacemakers 

Your electrophysiologist will determine the most appropriate device based on your diagnosis and heart function.

WHAT TO EXPECT

During Pacemaker Implantation 
Pacemaker implantation is typically performed using a minimally invasive procedure with local anesthesia and sedation. The device is placed beneath the skin and connected to the heart using specialized leads or implanted directly into the heart in the case of certain leadless pacemakers. 
Most patients return home the same day or the following day. 

Recovery and Follow-Up 
Mild soreness or bruising near the implantation site is common. Temporary activity restrictions may be recommended while the device heals into place. 
Regular follow-up visits and remote monitoring help ensure the pacemaker continues to function properly.
