Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI)

An Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) is a quick, non-invasive test that compares blood pressure in your ankles with blood pressure in your arms. It helps evaluate blood flow to your legs and can help identify peripheral artery disease (PAD), a condition caused by reduced blood flow through the arteries in the legs.

HOW TO PREPARE

To help ensure accurate results:
  • Avoid smoking and caffeine for at least 2 hours before your test.
  • Avoid vigorous exercise for at least 2 hours before testing.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and walking shoes.
  • Continue taking your medications unless your provider has given you different instructions.

WHAT TO EXPECT

You will rest comfortably while a technician takes blood pressure measurements in your arms and legs. Small blood pressure cuffs are placed around your arms and ankles and gently inflated to measure the pressure in your arteries. The test typically takes about 10–20 minutes.

AFTER THE TEST

There is no recovery time needed after an ABI. You can return to your normal activities immediately after testing.

Your results will be reviewed by your provider, who can explain what they mean, and whether any additional testing or follow-up is recommended.
