Carotid Ultrasound

A carotid ultrasound is a painless, non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to evaluate blood flow through the carotid arteries in your neck. These arteries supply blood to the brain. The test can help detect narrowing or blockages that may increase the risk of stroke.

HOW TO PREPARE

  • No special preparation is required.
  • Wear a loose-fitting shirt with an open collar if possible.
  • Avoid wearing turtlenecks, scarves, or necklaces that may interfere with the exam.

WHAT TO EXPECT

During the test, a cardiac sonographer or vascular technologist will apply a small amount of gel to your neck and use a handheld ultrasound device to capture images of your carotid arteries. The exam is painless, does not involve radiation, and typically takes 30–45 minutes.
