Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram, often called an "echo," is a painless ultrasound of the heart that uses sound waves to create detailed images of the heart as it beats. This test helps your provider evaluate heart structure, heart valves, blood flow, and overall heart function.

HOW TO PREPARE

  • No special preparation is required.
  • Wear comfortable clothing.
  • You may be asked to change into a gown for the exam.

WHAT TO EXPECT

During the test, a cardiac sonographer will place a small amount of gel on your chest and use a handheld device to capture images of your heart. The exam is painless, does not involve radiation, and typically takes 30–60 minutes.

AFTER THE TEST

You can return to your normal activities immediately. A cardiologist will review the images and discuss the results with you.
