Venous Ultrasound

A venous ultrasound is a painless, non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to evaluate the veins and blood flow in the legs or other areas of the body. This test helps identify conditions such as blood clots (deep vein thrombosis) and venous insufficiency.

HOW TO PREPARE

  • Avoid caffeine 24 hours before your test.
  • Drink plenty of water before your appointment to stay well hydrated.
  • Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing.

WHAT TO EXPECT

During the exam, a vascular technologist will apply a small amount of gel to the area being evaluated and use a handheld ultrasound device to capture images of your veins and blood flow. You may be asked to change positions during the test. The exam is painless, does not involve radiation, and typically takes 30–60 minutes.
