A right heart catheterization may be recommended to:

Diagnose or monitor pulmonary hypertension

Determine the cause of unexplained shortness of breath
Measure pressures within the heart and lungs

WHAT TO EXPECT
A thin, flexible catheter is inserted through a vein in the neck, arm, or groin and guided into the right side of the heart and pulmonary artery. The procedure is typically performed using local anesthesia and mild sedation.
During the procedure, your provider measures pressures, oxygen levels, and blood flow to better understand how your heart and lungs are functioning.
Most procedures take approximately 30 to 60 minutes.
